Goal

Develop an immersive AR installation that allows visitors to experience Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night" in a way that goes beyond a two-dimensional view.

Process

The concept phase began with the central question: How did Van Gogh see the night and how can this perception be brought to life? This gave rise to the concept of an AR experience that can be accessed via a QR code and a smartphone and does not require the installation of an app.
The 3D world was modelled in Cinema 4D, with custom-created models and AI-generated assets combined and enhanced with hand-painted textures to preserve Van Gogh's style. In parallel, a sound design was created: an AI-generated voiceover, conceived as Van Gogh's inner monologue based on his letters, is accompanied by an atmospheric sound composition.
The physical exhibition consisted of a golden picture frame on an easel, with a poster and a QR code sticker on the floor.

Final Exhibit

"Beyond the Frame" is a fully functional AR installation that allows visitors to immerse themselves in a three-dimensional version of "Starry Night" by scanning a QR code. Pointing your smartphone at the picture frame opens a portal into Van Gogh's digital world.

The experience is accompanied by Van Gogh's voice, which does not explain, but moves the listener. Thanks to its modular design, the system can be set up anywhere without specialist knowledge and can be adapted to other artworks by swapping the image target and 3D model.
The result demonstrates how design, technology and audio narration can work together to make art an experience in a completely different way.

The installation was successfully exhibited at the Visiodrom in Wuppertal.
